Engagement Session Do’s and Don’ts

Posted in: Engagements, Uncategorized

Engagements are such an important time right between the question and champagne popping. They’re full of Pinterest wedding planning, elated emotions, and gearing up for the biggest changes of your life. They’re also the time for one of my most adored portrait sessions, the engagement session! Some couples might see this session as another less important task on their wedding planning checklist. Quite the contrary!  Engagement sessions are included in every one of my wedding packages because through my years of experience I have seen just how valuable they are!  Here’s a little Q & A with me to help make them one of the most fun bullets on your checklist.

1. Why have an engagement session?
Photos from this laid-back session can give your wedding announcements, shower invitations, wedding invitations, and social media posts some of your personality as a couple. They’re a beautiful way to announce your “Yes!” before you say “I do.” These can be useful throughout your engagement and cherished in your future years together.

2. What is our location?
There’s no need to overthink this! Choose a place you enjoy as a couple. This can be where you first met, a symbolic location, or with scenery that makes you swoon.  Think of it as a fun date and do something you enjoy!  Go for a hike, make a picnic, hit up your favorite coffee shop.

3. What to wear?
Bring 2-4 outfits and make one dressy!  I personally think 3 outfits is the perfect number.  Having a variety gives you options when your portraits come back if you don’t love how one outfit photographed, it’s no big deal you have others to choose from.  One bride recently shared a great tip with me, she said to forget about the season and wear your absolute favorite clothing for at least one so you will be sure to love it!

This is your engagement session. You’re each other’s better halves, not the Olson Twins. When choosing what outfit to wear, look for ones that compliment each other with cohesive colors and patterns. If your style as a couple varies, this session allows for another “look” so no style has to compromise.

4. How can we get camera ready?
Engagement photos are a wonderful reason to practice a wedding day routine. From finding which facial your skin prefers to teeth whitening treatments to the most posh nail salon, this is a time to make sure these self-care routines are all up to your standards before your big day.
This session is also a time where you can get comfortable with your photographer and figure out poses that show yours and your significant other’s good sides. It even is a way to rock that new rock! Taking this time to familiarize yourself with the camera and your photographer can make taking your wedding photos a cake walk!

5. Don’t worry about it being perfect!

Don’t obsess over flaws or stress out about recreating your entire Pinterest board. Focus on the both of you being the wonderfully unique couple that YOU are!  Relax, let your photographer do their thing and you focus on enjoying time with the love of your life.
